Skål International Southern Gold Coast News
A Special Start to a New Year!!

After a year of Covid lockdowns, regulations where masks and hand sanitiser became the norm, how wonderful to enter year 2021 as a New year with some special occasions.

The southern Gold Coast destination now has a brand-new Hotel – enter the “Rydges Gold Coast Airport Hotel”. The brand new 192 room Hotel was fittingly chosen as the venue for our Clubs first meeting of 2021 and “the interest factor by Club members and guests was exceptionally high,” according to Club President David Freeman.

“Our Committee opted to not only view this new piece of key tourism infrastructure but experiencing the property by kicking off our 2021 breakfast meetings at this new venue. What was also a key consideration in our decision making, was to support a member property through Director of Sales & Marketing Michael Curtis, an inaugural member of our Club.
As Guest Speaker, our Club invited new General Manager Luke Harley to address us, on what this new piece of accommodation infrastructure brings to the southern Gold Coast Destination” said David. We also learnt that Luke himself had been a former Skålleague whist working in Bali several years back.

Members rallied strongly to attend this breakfast, so much so that only 2 apologies were received on the morning- certainly not our traditional experience for a January month breakfast!!

We had several other ‘special’ happenings at this breakfast – a visit by newly elected President of Skal’s International Council, Denise Scrafton.

The Club achieved another significant milestone by inducting 2 more new Club members Warwick Clarke from ‘The Lime Shed” Tweed area & Leo Crutchley Resident Manager at’ Kirra Surf Apartments” – new members number 9 & 10 respectively, for the October – December approval period.
Club members rated the breakfast first class, & most stayed on for a guided tour of the Hotel post our meeting – overall a wonderful meeting venue, offering great service & facilities.

In fact, members overwhelmingly supported the Club booking’ Rydges Airport Hotel’ in February (15th) for our Club Annual General meeting. “
A wonderful way to kick off a brand-New Year” David concluded.

It’s Number 10!!

The Southern Gold Coast Branch has achieved a new milestone in achieving 10 new members in just 3 months (from Oct – Dec 2020) to severely boost its membership base numbers.

Club President David Freeman said that in a difficult year with Covid regulations and restrictions, this had been a truly wonderful outcome for the Club. “Our membership numbers post 2019 renewals were ‘soft’, but we came back out of Covid to meet in July and were almost immediately able to generate a progressive number of new members post September through till year’s end.

Welcome Leo Crutchley, Kirra Surf Apartments

I am delighted to report that Leo Crutchley, current Resident Manager at” Kirra Surf Apartments”, has put us into double digit growth. Leo has been around tourism and hospitality for many years. His early engagement in tourism/ hospitality was managing popular Broadbeach Italian Restaurant” Mario’s”, followed by running a succession of Management rights along the Gold Coast, before taking over the iconic” Kirra Surf Apartments” with his wife – in fact, we have two other Skålleagues, residing at this building “he said.

This membership spurt really leverages the Club into a healthy position, but the Committee and I continue to chase more potential members “he concluded.

Yours in Skål,
Skål International Southern Gold Coast
